It's common in Pokémon games for players to acquire all starters to help them through the games, so their rival won't have the type advantage they usually would have, among other things. But in Pokémon X and Y, there are six starters instead of three (three you choose from in the beginning, three you choose from a bit later). Here's how to get every starter in the game with one copy!

  1. 1

Before you do anything, you must make sure you have the Pokémon Bank application and you can use it to transfer Pokémon. This is vital, as this is where you'll be storing your starters as you progress. Also, this may get a bit tedious as you have to get all the way to Lumiose City three times, but otherwise you'll have to get a friend to help you.

  2. 2

After you have gotten Pokémon Bank, start a new game in your preferred language. To restart, hold Up + X + B on the title screen and answer 'yes' to the questions.

  3. 3

Play through the game as you normally would until you get to Lumiose City and you meet Professor Sycamore in his lab. Battle him and get a starter. Save your game and quit. Then, go to Pokémon Bank and transfer your starters into the online box.

  4. 4

Reset your game and repeat Step 3 until you have acquired all starters. On the last run when you get the last 2, you do not need to transfer them to Pokémon Bank. Keep them in your game.

  5. 5

After you get the last Kanto starter you need, save and quit. Head into Pokémon Bank and take all the starters in your box out into your game.

  6. 6

You now have all Kanto and Kalos starters!

Try the Pokemon GTS online. It's an easy way of getting Pokemon you don't have, as long as you can deal with the bad trades many people want.

  • Question

Can I get a Torchic for free?

    Bun bun

Yes. Torchic is a starter Pokemon in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Just use the GTS. I'll try and snag mine from my downloaded copy of Silver and breed him.

  • Question

Who's the best starter in Kanto and in Kalos?

    Community Answer

That depends on personal preference. In my opinion there is no real advantage other than having the type advantage over your rival/neighbor (Pokémon X and Y).

  • If you don't have Pokémon Bank, either go onto the Nintendo eShop and download it (it's $5 a year to keep it running) or find a friend who has it running and transfer the Pokémon to them via trade.

  • If you only want to get a few select starters, you only have to repeat these steps until you receive your selected starters.

  • If you have many copies of Pokemon, you can transfer the starters from them as well, even if they are from the old DS games. You can also get a second Kalos starter in the end from an egg given to you by Shauna, and it holds the starter that yours has an advantage over. If you have starters you can spare, you can trade them in the GTS for rare Pokemon. (Another starter, for example).

  • This may get tedious as you have to go through the same battles and you have to beat Viola, the Santalune City Gym Leader. You can have a friend help you get the starters, and you'll only have to do it one or two times as opposed to three.
